These last few months have been tough, but the toughest part is the nagging voice in my head constantly telling me "stop being a legal secretary, it's not your destiny." This led me to listening to a lot of musical soundtracks, but mostly that one song from Avenue Q.
So, what do you do with a B.A. in English? So many people have so many different opinions on this. Specifically, I studied American Literature. Unfortunately, no one will pay me to tell them my opinion on classic literature, life, and other such topics.
When I was working on my undergraduate degree, I was met with a lot of critical comments and questions. "What are you going to do with an English degree?" "Oh, so, you want to be a teacher?" "Did you know that people with business degrees actually get jobs?" "You'll have to marry rich." "I hope you like the food service industry." And so on and so forth.
Everyone told me that the job hunt would be tough. Tougher than all of my friends who had "better" degrees than me, such as something with computers. Every company is looking for someone who is good at computers!
Crazy to think that I haven't been without a job for longer than a week since I was 16. I have always been able to find a job. A lot of my friends who do have those "better" degrees are still looking for jobs. We graduated two and a half, three years ago and they are still looking for jobs. Or working at Starbucks.
And yet, I get sent memes like this one. By people who have no jobs.
And while they were working at Starbucks, I found myself a nice little job at a law firm working for an attorney who was an English major himself.
Unfortunately, I have found out that this job is not what I was supposed to do with my English degree. Instead, I have decided to go back to school and pursue my M.A. in Literature.
